Let us assume you went on a trip and started taking video clips while you were still on the way. You ended up with a video lasting so many hours that you find it difficult to share with others. How do you determine which parts to cut off and join to create a smooth-flowing video? Microsoft Hyperlapse will make the process easy. The program uses advanced technology to distill first-person videos into smooth and stabilized time lapsed clips. Many programs for creating time-lapse videos require users to hold cameras still to get good results. However, Microsoft Hyperlapse uses advanced stabilization technology that allows you to create high-quality videos even with clips from hand-held cameras.
Using Microsoft Hyperlapse
Microsoft Hyperlapse features two buttons at the top of its user interface for opening existing projects or creating new ones. The program accepts MOV, WMV and MP4 files.
When we clicked the button to create a new project, the program took us through four steps to create our time-lapse video. We first needed to import the video file we wanted to use, and we selected a video we had captured with a smartphone. The Import screen let us set the start and end points, which were displayed on the lower left and right parts of the program window. It also displayed the total length of the selected video file.
Clicking the Next button took us to the Settings pane where we could specify our desired speed-up rate from 2x to 25x. We could also set the desired smoothing option. We could not use the advanced option because we did not use a known camera model. Other things we could set there included the output folder, resolution and frame rate. We also saw video stats like original, trimmed and estimated output lengths and the estimated processing time.
We clicked the Next button and went to the Processing step where we did not need to do anything. Microsoft Hyperlapse displayed a progress bar and percentage completed.
The Finish step showed the output folder and processed video, with the option to go back if we wanted to change some settings.
Conclusion
Microsoft Hyperlapse makes it easy for anyone to create high quality time-lapse videos. The wizard-like user interface removes the need for any video processing knowledge and requires only a few simple steps. The output is smoother than merely speeding up the original videos. However, you can apparently only access advanced smoothing options if you are using a Sony HDR or GoPro camera.
